Through infrastructure and technological development, the travel and tourism sector has become a key player for the Indian economy over the years. In the last decade, multiple schemes and initiatives have been launched to promote the country’s name on the world map through tourism. In 2018, India ranked 3rd position in global tourism rankings. In 2023, a revenue generation of ₹2.3lakh crore was recorded through foreign exchange earnings in tourism. 1
Needless to say, the travel and tourism sector is vital for the country’s economic growth as it promotes employment, GDP growth, revenue generation, enhances the country’s global image, and much more.
Union Budget 2025: India Tourism Gets a Boost
The Finance Minister has announced some major initiatives to boost the country’s travel and tourism sector. The sector can benefit heavily through various programs and initiatives focusing on the development of tourism sites, heritage sites, medical and wellness tourism, better connectivity, skills for hospitality and a world-class infrastructure.

50 Tourism Sites
One of the key initiatives announced by the Finance Minister in the Union Budget 2025 is the redevelopment and makeover of 50 tourism sites in the country. This is to be done in partnership with respective states through a unique challenge to the selection process. The budget also disclosed that the Indian states will have to provide land for building these infrastructures and hotels to promote tourism.

In addition to allocating funds and promoting development projects for tourism sites, the Union Budget 2025 has announced five major initiatives that include:
- Financial Assistance for Homestays :
The government has announced that special loans under Mudra Yojana will be offered to entrepreneurs to help them build better homestays. This also includes focusing on promoting and encouraging local business and community-driven tourism. - Promoting Better Connectivity :
The central government, in partnership with the state government, will undertake projects to ensure better connectivity that will make it easier for tourists to travel to popular destinations throughout the country. - Simplified Visa Process :
In order to attract international travellers, a streamlined e-visa system must be introduced. In addition to this, the budget has also announced the introduction of visa fee waivers for certain tourist groups to promote the country‘s tourism. - Skill Development :
To promote skills among youth by offering high-class tourism and hospitality. Special training programmes are to be organised through different institutes of hospitality management in the country. - State Level Incentives :
Indian states that offer top-class tourist facilities and introduce unique marketing projects to promote their tourism will be provided with performance-linked incentives (PLI).
Focus on Spiritual and Heritage Tourism
India has always been home to spiritual and heritage tourism. To strengthen this form of tourism the government has announced to lay special emphasis on tourism sites related to Lord Buddha’s life as a global Buddhist pilgrimage destination.
Heal in India Initiatives
In addition to being a spiritual and heritage hub, India also has the potential to benefit from medical and wellness tourism. The government has announced its willingness to partner with private sectors and promote “Heal in India” initiatives.
