Eligibility Criteria for International Driver’s Licence
All member nations have the same eligibility standards for the International Driving Permit. Most nations charge a nominal cost to issue them; this fee varies from nation to nation. Candidates must meet the requirements listed below:
- Must be older than 18 years of age.
- Should have a current driver’s licence.
- Submit the official paperwork created by the relevant authority together with three passport-sized photos.
There are some countries where an Indian driving licence is valid. These include the following:
- Australia
Australia is a popular destination for Indian tourists and businessmen alike. Whether you are at work or on vacation, your Indian driver’s licence will be accepted as real and valid throughout the country.
If you were to drive in Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales, or the Australian Capital Territory, your Indian driver’s licence would be considered to be valid for more than a year.
Sadly, in the Northern parts of the country, such a licence is only valid for three months. Remember these things in advance so that you can make the appropriate preparations.
- USA
A 2019 survey found that there are about 2.7 million Indians living in the USA (source). You should be aware that your Indian driver’s licence is valid for one year starting from the date of admission in the USA.
Several requirements must be completed in order to do so. Which are:
The driver’s licence must be current.
Also, while driving, you should have an attested Form I-94 with you. It should be in English.
Form I-94 is regarded as proof of entry into the USA on a specific date.
For at least a year, you do not need to obtain a separate licence in America because this country accepts Indian driving licences as one of its foreign driving licences.
- New Zealand
Neighbouring Another country where an Indian national does not require a new driver’s licence is Australia. You can use your current licence as long as you follow the following guidelines if you intend to live in or visit New Zealand soon.
In New Zealand, you must be at least 21 years old to rent a car.
Your driver’s licence must be in English, or you must have a New Zealand Transport Agency-approved translation of it.
- France
Do you long for French cuisine and wine? You can avoid transit issues by driving your own car, whether you want to visit the spectacular Eiffel Tower or simply drive to a business conference.
Even though it is recognised, your Indian driver’s licence cannot be used without an official French translation. Also, because Indian drivers are used to right-hand drives, French cars have a left-hand drive, which can be challenging for them.
- UK
Other countries where you can safely travel on roads with an Indian driving licence include Wales, England, and Scotland. The licence in question should, nevertheless, be in English.
- Switzerland
Since it was made known by Shahrukh Khan and Kajol in the timeless film “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,” Switzerland has become a popular honeymoon destination for Indians.
You’ll be glad to know that the nation enables Indian drivers to operate vehicles on their current licence if you intend to recreate the magic with your loved ones.
- South Africa
The greatest way to appreciate South Africa’s scenic beauty is to travel on its many wide, spacious highways. If your Indian driver’s licence is still valid for the whole year, you are permitted to operate a car or motorcycle on these roads.
Indians do not need to change their driving habits because South African cars are right-hand drive.
Sweden, Germany, Bhutan, Canada, Malaysia are other countries where you do not require a separate license.
